Garvey School District Gets

De Facto Third Middle School

The Dewey elementary school in the Garvey School District has added seventh and eighth grades to its traditional K-6 curriculum. According to Kiwanian Jan Mackay this effectively gives the Garvey District a third middle school.

The objective of the additional two grade levels is to enhance enrollment at a time that many elementary schools are seeing declines due to aging populations. A second purpose is to keep students from straying into the neighboring Rosemead School District. At last count, Dewey had 364 students, up from 310 two years ago, according to an article by Ester Chou in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

Says Chou:

"Historically, about 20 percent of the sixth-graders do not attend Garvey Intermediate School, according to Dewey principal Raymond Che. He thinks many of them attend nearby Muscatel Middle School in the Rosemead School District. While both secondary schools are about a 1 1/2 miles away from Dewey, drivers or walkers going to Garvey must cross a freeway underpass.

'Once they cross the freeway, they feel like another world. it's kind of hard to explain that impression,' Che said.' "

Some parents reportedly like the small-school atmosphere at Dewey, which is much smaller than Garvey Intermediate. The latter school presently has a student census of about 830.  However, Garvey has a stronger set of programs in certain areas.

Rosemead Kiwanis sponsors active Builders Clubs and is involved with after school programs at both Garvey and Muscatel. The Club is also involved with the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program at both schools, but nothing presently at Dewey.  Dewey is technically in within the city limits of San Gabriel and therefore is in the service area of the San Gabriel Kiwanis Club.

Chou notes that Dewey’s initiative reflects a trend. Many schools are adding academic and daycare programs to both keep students enrolled and perhaps attract pupils from outside their primary service areas.
