NEWS

WAYNE MARTIN NAMED HONORARY KIWANIAN

The RKC, responding to cancellation of its scheduled CMI meeting, on Dec 18 held a special Interclub with the El Monte Kiwanis Club at the Byron Thompson School for Orthopedically Handicapped Children,

Featured was a presentation of Xmas songs by the Thompson School’s Bellringers Choir, made up of physically challenged students from the school.  The group has been featured in presentations at numerous locations and is comprised of special needs kids from the fourth thru the eighth grades, organized and directed for the last thirty two years by Wayne Martin of the Whittier Lion’s Club.

According to an article in the May, 2008, issue of  The Main Lion” this group is “the result of a long held dream of teaching these kids to play and perform. They use a variety of adaptive techniques and modifications to the bells that allow even the weakest child to be included in the choir. Wayne has done most of these modifications himself and the group is “world renown” with performances at Disneyland, the L. A. Music’s Center’s Special Arts Festival, the National Convention of the Council for Exceptional Children, and Chapman College.”

In a surprise move Mr. Martin was presented with a plaque naming him an honorary Kiwanian.
