SPECIAL REPORT – Disaster Counseling

Californians tend to think of disaster in terms of earthquake and fire, those in the Midwest think of floods and tornados, gulf coasters think of hurricanes. More recently people everywhere have had to think in terms of terror.

Before the September 11th al qaeda attacks, the Oklahoma City Bombing  of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995, was the deadliest act of terrorism on U.S. soil. It involved a truck bombing which claimed 168 lives and over 800 injured.

The September 11th attack was a tragedy involving aircraft hijacking, mass murder, murder-suicide, and suicide attack, with a result of 2,998 fatalities, 2,603 in New York City in the towers and on the ground. More than 6,291 civilians were injured on that Tuesday. Early in the morning, nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners. Two of the hijackers flew into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center.  More deaths occurred in Washington at the Pentagon.

Traumatic events are not easy for anyone to understand or accept. The emotional impact of war and other trauma can have devastating effects on the mental well-being of individuals of all ages.

When disasters strike, mental health/substance abuse agencies and local service providers are suddenly thrust onto the frontline for response and recovery efforts. Often they find themselves confronting new or unknown problems for which no amount of preplanning is possible.

Disaster counseling involves both listening and guiding. Survivors typically benefit from both talking about their disaster experiences and being assisted with problem-solving and referral to resources. Understanding the disaster counselor’s role, especially in the context of our forthcoming Neighborhood Watch efforts, is a focal point of this week’s Rosemead Kiwanis meeting.
