Traumatic events are not easy for anyone to understand or accept.
The emotional impact of war and other trauma can have devastating effects on
the mental well-being of individuals of all ages.
When disasters strike, mental health/substance
abuse agencies and local service providers are suddenly thrust onto the
frontline for response and recovery efforts. Often they find
themselves confronting new or unknown problems for which no amount of
preplanning is possible.
Disaster counseling involves both listening and guiding. Survivors
typically benefit from both talking about their disaster experiences and being
assisted with problem-solving and referral to resources. Understanding the
disaster counselor’s role, especially in the context of our forthcoming
Neighborhood Watch efforts, is a focal point of this week’s Rosemead Kiwanis
meeting.
