SPECIAL REPORT: 2008 ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER

                                        LEADERSHIP AWARDS

Asian Pacific Island Award Heritage Month began in 1978 when the week of May 1-7 was officially named “APIA Heritage Week.”  In 1990, the designated week was expanded to include the entire month of May.  Over the past two decades, the APIA community has grown tremendously, both in population and in its contributions to the nation.

The Asian Pacific Islander Leadership Awards will recognize individuals and/or groups who have provided leadership in one or more of the following categories: Art, Culture, Music or Entertainment, Business Entrepreneurship, Community Activism, Education, Non-Profit Service, Youth, Veterans, and/or Senior Citizens Service.  The nominees must live, work, or provide services to the 49th Assembly District, which includes the cities of Alhambra, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, and South El Monte.  Self-nominations will be accepted.

According to Assemblyman Mike Eng, who represents the 49th District, “Asian Pacific Islanders have made significant contributions to the larger community and deserve special recognition. I believe this is especially true in the 49th Assembly District, where we have one of the most vibrant and diverse API populations in California.” The awards will recognize ten distinguished individuals who represent the best qualities of the Asian American community.

·        Nominees MUST live, work, or provide services in the 4th Assembly District. This  includes the cities of Alhambra, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, and South El Monte.

·        The Nominee must have provided leadership in one or more of the following areas: Art, Culture, Music or Entertainment, Business Entrepreneurship, Community Activism, Education, Non-Profit Service, Youth, Veterans, and/or Senior Citizens Service.

Ten individuals will be selected who have distinguished themselves in one or more of these areas; however all areas may not be represented. Awardees MUST be present at the May 28 award celebration listed above

Nomination forms should be submitted to Phong Ly in Assemblyman Eng’s office via email at phong.ly@asm.ca.gov or fax at (626) 450.6117.  The nomination deadline is Wednesday May 7, 2008.
