NEWS

Safety Center Launches Monthly Meetings – With Rosemead Kiwanis and Rosemead Chamber affiliates Wal-Mart and Golden Rose florists furnishing refreshments and flowers Rosemead’s safety center held a successful meeting for just under 200 people April 16.  Future meetings will be held the third Wednesday of each month at the Zapopan Center Sherriff’s station, 8301 E Garvey Blvd, according to Rosemead  Public Safety Services Director Don Anderson.

Anderson noted that, in addition to the monthly meetings, there are other ongoing and prospective programs emanating from the facility, which works closely with the Sheriff’s Department.  Among these are:

·        a $100,000 graffiti abatement grant

·        e-mail alert systems for neighborhoods

·        adopt a wall programs to discourage taggers

·        youth work projects – to channel youthful offenders into productive community service painting curbs and clearing weeds

·        division of the city into four code enforcement districts.

Anderson introduced the people he works with including six deputy sheriffs, three community services officers, five code enforcement officers, two assistants and the city’s pubic safety coordinator. The latter will be responsible for revival of the city’s Neighborhood Watch operations and will be our Kiwanis liaison.

Anderson noted that, through March, the city is on track to lower the Part I crime rate, which includes homicide, rape, robbery, assault, burglary, larceny, grand theft auto, and arson.  The projection is a reduction of 200 incidents for the year.  He stated that a successful pubic safety program involves a combination of prevention, intervention and suppression.  It also involves partnership between the city, schools, county sheriff, and community members. All were amply represented at the meeting.

UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS:
