Greetings to our K-Family (Kiwanis affiliated group of clubs), RKN (Rosemead Kiwanis Network) and other friends

· NEWS: Recent developments and activities related to Rosemead – this week: A special Wal-Mart grant to our Rosemead Kiwanis Foundation and a revival of Rosemead’s Neighborhood Watch.

· EVENTS: Activities in and around Rosemead, with emphasis on Rosemead Club meetings and Rosemead Kiwanis Network activities. Featured are speakers for April Kiwanis meetings.

NEWS

Neighborhood Watch Rejuvenation – A revival of the Rosemead  Neighborhood Watch program is slated to begin with a public meeting on April 16. The meeting will be held at the Zapopan Center Sherriff’s station, 8301 E Garvey Blvd, according to Rosemead  Public Safety Services Director Don Anderson.  He invited the active participation of Rosemead Kiwanis as part of his presentation at a fingerprinting session held on March 27; the invitation was enthusiastically accepted by the Kiwanians present.

The original Rosemead Watch program was in the early nineties a joint project of the Kiwanis sponsored KEY Club, Rosemead Interfaith Council, Sheriff’s Department and the City of Rosemead. The story of that effort was chronicled in a 2006 Rosemead Reporter feature story which can be read here.

Neighborhood Watch is important in our view to facilitate four objectives: crime prevention, disaster preparedness, shut-in awareness, and neighborhood/ community communication.  According to 2008-2009 Kiwanis President Elect Bob Bruesch we will be making this effort a project in the forthcoming year.

Wal-Mart awards Grant to Rosemead Kiwanis Foundation – a $5000 grant has been given by Wal-Mart to the Rosemead Kiwanis foundation. It was presented to the club by Wal-Mart Community Coordinator Patricia Radford. meeting.

Clipper’s Discount – The invitation to attend the April 6 game of the Los Angeles Clippers against the Houston Rockers at discounts from regular prices is still open. . Depending on seating tickets are available to Kiwanis Club members and guests for $60, $50 or $20 (discounts of $25, $10 and $10 respectively). Note: each adult ticket now carries with it a bonus – a free ticket for a school age child!

Thursday, April 3, 2008 - Federal Probation (Regular Meeting)

Rick Lugo, local overseer of Federal offenders for the Department of Justice, will have a special presentation and has particularly invited our Builder's Club and KEY Club members to be in attendance.

Thursday, April 10, 2008 - Muscatel Builders (Note special meeting/location)

Special annual luncheon meeting with the Rosemead Kiwanis sponsored Builder’s Club members officers at Muscatel Intermediate School.

Thursday, April 17, 2008 - Sudan Relief (Regular Meeting)

Lenni Luchau is by profession a bookkeeper, but she has spent the last year working for a relief organization in Sudan, and will be sharing her experiences.

Thursday, April 24, 2008 - California Youth Authority (Regular Meeting)

Mario Gras, of California's Dept. of Juvenile Justice (formerly California Youth Authority), will present a program designed to inform and educate our sponsored youth (who fortunately seldom encounter his department's services first hand).
