NEWS

Required Kiwanian Fingerprinting – In response to various concerns school districts, youth groups, parents, and law enforcement agencies have been tightening requirements for background checks and fingerprinting of all adults working with children. Rosemead Kiwanis recognizes the wisdom the trend towards such precautions.

Accordingly the Club will be considering adoption of a formal policy in this regard (already distributed in draft form to Club members) at its March 20 meeting.  At the same time arrangements have been made to secure such checks for club members en masse and free of charge on March 27 (see under events below). School administrators and others previously required by their office or employment to secure a greater type of scan/check will not need to need participate.

Clipper’s Discount – The invitation to attend the April 6 game of the Los Angeles Clippers against the Houston Rockers at discounts from regular prices is still open. . Depending on seating tickets are available to Kiwanis Club members and guests for $60, $50 or $20 (discounts of $25, $10 and $10 respectively). SPECIAL REPORT: ROSEMEAD SCHOOLS STAR IN 2008 OLYMPIAD

Led by Muscatel Intermediate’s three time defending County champions, Rosemead area schools placed among top leaders in the Los Angeles County Science Olympiad March 15 held at Cal State University at Los Angeles.

The Muscatel Team had a convincing win over its Division competitors. The closest finished a distant second, 50 points behind the Mustang team.  Muscatel team members placed 1st in 11 of 23 events, 2nd in 5 events, 3rd in 2 events, and 4th in 2 events.

The Muscatel team failed to medal in only 3 events, one of which was the robot event where the team’s robot experienced two mechanical failures. Regarding the mishap Muscatel Principal and Kiwanian Dean Wharton noted that “neither of these failures occurred in over 100 trial runs over the past two months.”

Another medal failure was due to a contested disqualification in the Amphibians and Reptiles event. Entries from Muscatel, as well as other schools including Gidley and Garvey, were disqualified due to an interpretation of the rules. Although inclusion won’t affect the final results all schools involved are protesting.

With the win Muscatel qualifies for the California State finals which will be held on Saturday April 12th at Cal State Long Beach.  The Rosemead Kiwanis Foundation is a $1000 contributor towards the team’s efforts.

RHS/Gidley/Garvey Also Score

Seven Muscatel Science Olympiad team former members helped the Rosemead High School Panthers qualify for the state competition with a 5th place finish in the High School division.  This means that RHS also qualifies for the State finals on April 12.

The Panthers took a 2nd place medal in “The Sound of Music” event which was coached by Muscatel teacher Mrs. Helen Taylor.

Gidley Intermediate School of El Monte, which also feeds into Rosemead High School, gave the Muscatel Mustangs some competition with a fifth place division finish. This augers well for RHS in future years.

Garvey Intermediate School was also being heard from, achieving a twelfth place finish among participating County schools.
