NEWS

Solis signs on to support RIF – Rosemead Congresswoman Hilda Solis has joined over 100 members of Congress in protesting deletion of RIF (Reading is Fundamental) funding from the 2008-2009 Federal budget. States education affairs staffer Liz Muro in an E-mail to the RKC Reporter “She is a huge supporter of this program as it benefits over 20,000 students in the district. There apparently never was any question of her continuing her traditional support for the program; new internal House procedures now require completion of additional paperwork by Representatives signing such petitions and the press of other business had simply taken priority.

Required Kiwanian Fingerprinting – In response to various concerns school districts, youth groups, parents, and law enforcement agencies have been tightening requirements for background checks and fingerprinting of all adults working with children. Rosemead Kiwanis recognizes the wisdom the trend towards such precautions.  Accordingly the Club will be considering adoption of a formal policy in this regard (already distributed in draft form to Club members) at its March 20 meeting.  At the same time arrangements have been made to secure such checks for club members en masse and free of charge on March 27 (see under events below). School administrators and others previously required by their office or employment to secure a greater type of scan/check will not need to need participate.

SPECIAL REPORT: Woodcraft Rangers Spotlight Garvey Activities

The Woodcraft Rangers, after school contractor for the Garvey School District, has released the following spring activities information in a memo to the Rosemead Kiwanis Club:

1. ELEMENTARY SPORTS PROGRAM  March Soccer, April basketball and May kickball are being featured in the WR program for the Garvey/Puente/Montebello schools.  Involved Rosemead teams will come from the following Garvey district schools:  Dewey, Duff, Emerson, Hillcrest, Marshall, Rice, Sanchez, and Willard.

The March soccer group is competing for the chance to play against LAUSD's champion team at the Home Depot Center on Saturday, May 3, 2008.

2. CHORALE PROGRAM The same Garvey schools, 20 students from each, are cooperating in a chorale program that will culminate in a major performance night at the end of the school year. Each school has chosen one song they would like to perform and, with the help of Eva Hinojoza, Chorale Music Director, and Steve Clay, Activities Consultant specializing in performing arts, they will all come together in the final number "We Are the World."

Each group will be representing a different country by dressing in its traditional clothing. The date is tentatively set for Saturday, May 10, 2008. The exact location is still to be officially designated. Woodcraft Rangers is “very excited to finally be able to organize such a big community event,” according to WR Garvey Region lead coordinator Joanne Hou.

3. DUFF SCHOOL HOOKS UP WITH OPRAH Duff Elementary School to be chosen as one of Oprah Winfrey’s Ambassador Schools. This program, operated jointly by Oprah’s Angel Network and Free the Childen, pairs North American schools with people in developing nations around the world. As part of the project Duff students will be making books for children in East Asia and a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on clean water in East Asia. WR will be providing computer software and video equipment to help the students make their PSA. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to become community leaders and we appreciate Duff Principal Rock's kindness in having us join in on the fun!

4. DISTRICT Wii TOURNEY All Garvey District schools now have a Wii interactive game system that can be used for educational ends. Each system contains flat screen TVs, Wii consoles, and enough controllers to accommodate for 16 students to play at the same time.

WR Nutrition/Fitness Activity Consultant Tammy Reese has put together an innovative curriculum for the students. They can now learn about the history and techniques in baseball, tennis, bowling, golf, and boxing while staying fit and burning calories. This has led to a Wii Tournament where the top team from each school will compete for a District championship. The tournament will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Temple Intermediate, 11am - 1pm.
