NEWS
WALMART ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVE – Wal-Mart’s CEO last week announced in Kansas City a multi-point environmental initiative which dovetails with the local Wal-Mart Supercenter environmental initiative. Kiwanian Jorge Lopez was there and a detailed report has been posted to the rosemeadkiwanis.org website.

TEMPLE TECHNOLOGY CENTER – Rosemead Kiwanis this month is granting $1300 to the new Technology Center at Temple Intermediate School. The Center is a 50-student capacity facility which will be shared with the adjacent Sanchez Elementary School. In addition to the previously announced World of Flight program the Center’s ten computers will have programs for physics, chemistry, and biology plus earth and space sciences. Final details are yet to be worked out but it is anticipated that the facility will be heavily used after school as well as during customary classroom hours.
SIERRA MADRE KIWANIS GRANTS – Kiwanian Jan Mackay notes that our sister Club in Sierra Madre has started out the year supporting several area schools and organizations. The Paul Magaris Community Service grant was given in the amount of $200 to the Sierra Madre Girls Softball Association and to Sierra Madre Middle School. A $300 grant was given to Pasadena Educational Foundation's Auction to benefit Sierra Madre Elementary School. Finally a $500 grant was given to Alverno High School to purchase foreign language text books. Any local student, school or organization can apply for a Kiwanis grant.

SPECIAL REPORT – NCLB REVIEW
Kiwanian and Garvey School Superintendent Virginia Peterson introduced Anita Chu to lead a discussion of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act at the January 24, 2008 meeting of the Rosemead Kiwanis Club.
