SPECIAL REPORT – Maryvale starts Offsite Apartment Living Program

For over 150 years Maryvale (the present name for the former Los Angeles Orphanage) has served the needs of young people, presently exclusively girls below 18. From its inception it has been an activity of the Daughters of Charity, a Catholic religious order. Rosemead Kiwanis has been pleased to support Maryvale’s efforts through various means over the years.

Now Maryvale is moving to assist those transitioning from protected environment programs to adult life in a more structured manner, according to an article in the Fall issue of Maryvale’s Careline Magazine.

The key is a new aftercare services and apartment living program.

States the article:

“Thousands of young adults leave residential programs each year with little or no ongoing loving adult support, let alone financial help. It has been found that many young adults leaving places like Maryvale have ended up in challenging situations that they haven’t been able to meet effectively,

“Some have come to us for support in their crises; many others have ended up homeless, in abusive relationships or as single parents….Statistics show that young adults leaving the foster care system are four times more likely to succeed if they live in a supportive environment for three years.

“In August we closed escrow on a 26-unit apartment complex in El Monte with 48 parking spacers. We will only use five or six of those units for our programs, which will be supported by the others.

“Each Maryvale client must be involved in a job and or school and be committed to following both Maryvale’s and the apartment complex’s rules. The first three months are rent free and after this the rent increases over the course of the 3 to 4 years the young woman is in this emancipation program.”

Several Sisters of Charity members are directly involved with various aspects of the program, but volunteers are needed to be mentors. Persons wishing to help may call Ann Lobsinger at 626/280-6510.
