SPECIAL REPORT – Temple Intermediate Teacher honored with $25,000 Milliken Award

The visit of California State Department of Education Superintendent Jack McConnell to Temple Intermediate School Thursday, December 6 came with a special surprise.  Former dentist turned educator Aaron Chung, best known to Kiwanians as the driving force behind Temple intermediate School’s Saturday Algebra Academy, was honored with a $25,000 Milken Family Foundation National Educator award.  The Academy is one of several Rosemead Kiwanis supported projects at the school.

Among Chung's accomplishments in his teaching career, according to Internet sources, is helping more than 80 percent of his algebra students achieve proficiency on the math portion of the California Standards Test. Additionally, the same percentage of his students have passed the California High School Exit Exam and are eligible to take college-level classes.

McConnell, whose administration has as its theme “Closing the Achievement Gap.” honored the school’s principal, Kiwanian C. P. Cheung, the faculty and students for raising the school’s overall state score from 606 to 737 since 2001. He credited this in large part to the schools partnering with local civic, business and faith based groups, including specifically Rosemead Kiwanis and the Evergreen Baptist Church.

Cheung in his remarks noted that the school has moved from being a gang-risk school to the one with the highest perfect attendance record in the district. It also is one of the few schools with increasing enrollment. It formed an excellent into an inspirational speech by former Los Angeles Rams “Fearsome Foursome” lineman Rosey Grier, who urged students to believe in their potential, affirming it each morning as they look in the mirror, while following his example as a youth of simply walking away from proposed wrong activities..

Assemblyman Michael Eng also spoke, citing his experiences as a former KEY Club member, an experience which he credits with having shaped his life of public service and literally saving him from potential suicide as teen.  The RKC presently works closely with Mr. Eng’s office in publicizing local citizen involvement activities.

After the festivities were over Lowell Milkin and about a dozen participating Kiwanians were given a tour of the new Rosemead Kiwanis supported World in Flight laboratory on the Temple campus.  The lab is under the direction of Kahneta Banforde and the Ian Pappas Directions Foundation, which will be shared with the adjacent Sanchez Elementary School
