RIF HIGHLIGHTS eNEWSLETTER

 

Your RKC (Rosemead Kiwanis Club) is actively involved in coordination  of RIF (Reading is Fundamental programs in 12 Garvey and Rosemead School District elementary schools through RIF-SoCal. 

In addition to helping with three activities in these schools we are happy to make available the RIF Highlights electronic eNewsletter to interested parents in an easy to read, larger than normal font, format.

We are delighted to announce Commonwealth Business Media as RIF's November Donor of the Month.

In August 2007, RIF welcomed Commonwealth Business Media as a new corporate partner. Their generous donation supports RIF programs in 10 communities near their regional offices.

Over 13,000 children will benefit from Commonwealth Business Media's support and volunteering efforts.

  Reading Planet Powwow
November is American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, a time to honor their history, cultures, and traditions. In celebration, RIF is holding its first annual Reading Planet Powwow, an online festival where children can:
  • Browse RIF's American Indian Heritage Booklist
  • Meet Joseph Bruchac, an Abenaki Indian storyteller and author
  • Watch videos of traditional Anerican Indian dances and songs
  • Learn about notable American Indians
  • Enter the Powwow Trivia Contest
  • And more!

For Kids Birth -5: Check out RIF’s Leading to Reading website for an American Indian-themed bedtime story activity and booklist.



 

 

 
  Reading Superstar
Do you know any young Star Wars fans? If so, they’ll enjoy reading our Q&A with Natalie Portman who played Padmé. They’ll learn about her favorite things, as well as what it was like for her to appear on “Sesame Street” and meet Elmo!

  News Highlights
Join "The Drive"!
November 7–21, 2007, K-12 classroom teams are invited to participate in the nation’s largest student-run food-and-clothing drive. It's the first event of a new effort called The LEAGUE with events linked to state coded and grade specific curriculum. The LEAGUE also offers 1,200 free Learning to Give curriculum lessons and links. To join "The Drive" visit, www.theleague.org.
